RFID consortium supports introduction of digital product passport

Friedberg, 15 July 2025 – The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a key instrument of the European sustainability strategy and part of the EU Regulation on the eco-design of products (ESPR). It creates transparency across the entire life cycle of a product – from manufacture to use and repair to recycling. The aim is to strengthen sustainable management, circular processes and legal compliance. In addition, consumers receive information on the energy efficiency, reparability and environmental compatibility of a product. All companies that manufacture, distribute or import goods in the EU must implement the DPP. From 2026, the obligation will gradually apply to various product groups: iron and steel will be the first, followed by aluminium, textiles and tyres in 2027. By 2028 at the latest, the requirements will also apply to furniture, tyres, detergents, chemicals, mattresses, electrical appliances and much more. The RFID Consortium, a full-service solution provider for auto-ID and digitisation projects, offers a practical introduction with its ‘DPP KickStart’ package based on RFID technology. In a pilot project, the DPP is first defined for one product within four months and can later be extended to additional products. This enables manufacturing companies to gain valuable insights at an early stage for more comprehensive implementation.

DPP: An obligation with potential

The Digital Product Passport maps the entire life cycle of a product – from manufacturing to recycling – in the form of a ‘digital ID card’. This requires the creation of a digital twin that stores a range of data specified by the EU. This includes material composition, reparability, carbon footprint, conformity certificates (CE, RoHs), product life, safety instructions and disposal.

‘Many companies initially view the introduction of the DPP as a bureaucratic hurdle. We show them how they can generate real added value from it – through end-to-end digitalisation, greater transparency and enhanced competitiveness,’ says Thomas Heijnen, responsible for marketing and sales at the RFID Consortium. ‘Those who start early gain a head start – both technologically and strategically.’

RFID technology: Digital twins in practice

The RFID Consortium has been supporting companies for many years in digitally labelling their products using RFID – and thus in creating digital twins. The technology enables automated and legally compliant collection of relevant product data directly at the point of origin – for example, in production. RFID tags (transponders or labels) give each product a unique ID that ensures it can be tracked throughout its entire life cycle. This product ID links all the information collected and makes it clearly assignable at any time, even when stored decentrally. Data collected via stationary or mobile RFID reading units can be transferred directly to manufacturing and product databases using standardised interfaces. This creates a complete digital twin that can be used to reliably map all EU requirements for the digital product passport – including traceability, production data and important product-specific information such as material composition, manufacturing details or components used.

KickStart: Your first DPP in four months

With the DPP KickStart package, the RFID Consortium offers a structured introduction: within four months, the digital product passport is defined for an individually selected product in a pilot project – including analysis, consulting, technology concept and its subsequent implementation roadmap in accordance with EU requirements. The goal: to give companies a realistic insight into how the full introduction of the DPP can be successfully implemented across their entire product portfolio.

Thomas Heijnen comments: ‘One thing is clear: the introduction of the DPP is not a “nice-to-have”, but a foreseeable obligation. Failure to comply will result in sanctions from the EU. At the same time, the DPP offers the opportunity to digitise processes, create ecological transparency and actively address customer needs for greater sustainability. The RFID Consortium is the partner for companies that want to actively shape this change.’

About RFID Konsortium

The system integrator from Friedberg in Hesse has been developing and implementing Auto-ID solutions for medium-sized and large customers in Germany and abroad since 2008. To date, its references include over 100 companies from various industries. With the nine RF KonSys modules, RFID Konsortium offers freely combinable building blocks for optimizing intralogistics processes such as track & trace, incoming/outgoing goods, storage, inventory, picking, delivery, quality assurance, maintenance & servicing and replenishment control. The aim is to map processes error-free, at a reasonable cost and with a fast return on investment (ROI). Stationary, mobile and AI gate solutions are added to the portfolio with outgoing goods gate solutions. Customers decide to use RFID in order to digitize processes and thus operate more efficiently and competitively on the market. RFID Konsortium provides a holistic approach from a single source: from process consulting to a six-phase project implementation (“RF KonSys strategy”) and connection to internal IT systems. Depending on the customer scenario, high-quality readers, transponders, printers and mobile devices from well-known manufacturers are used for the hardware.
