RFID-Gate

An RFID gate is an automated interface for the contactless identification and control of goods, load carriers or persons. RFID gates ensure greater efficiency, transparency and security, particularly in logistics, manufacturing and quality assurance. As a stationary RFID reading unit, the gate scans objects in real time – without visual contact and without manual intervention. With the RF KonSys AI gate, the RFID Consortium goes one step further:

the integration of artificial intelligence takes precision and process control to a new level.

What components make up an RFID gate?

An RFID gate is a permanently installed RFID reading system that usually consists of antennas, readers and a control unit. It is used in areas where goods or vehicles pass through to automatically detect RFID tags. As soon as an object equipped with an RFID transponder passes through the gate, relevant data – such as serial numbers, product information or location data – is automatically read and transmitted to the connected IT system (e.g. ERP).

The RF KonSys AI Gate – Automated loading control with artificial intelligence

The RF KonSys AI Gate combines classic RFID technology with AI-supported object recognition and decision logic. This makes the system particularly suitable for applications such as automated loading control in goods dispatch. It detects in real time whether the correct items are being loaded onto the correct truck in the correct order – fully automatically and with secure documentation.

Advantages of the RF KonSys AI gate

  • Fully automatic loading control without manual scans
  • Preventing incorrect loading with AI-supported inspection
  • Real-time visualisation of correct and incorrect loading units
  • Complete documentation of all movements (audit trail)
  • Easy integration into existing logistics processes and ERP
  • Scalability through modular architecture

Areas of application for RFID gates

RFID gates are used in various industries and applications. These include, among others:

  • Goods receiving and dispatch areas in logistics centres
  • Loading areas in manufacturing companies
  • Intralogistics and supply chain management
  • Access control for people or vehicles in industrial facilities
  • Returns management and quality assurance
  • Automated stock transfers and order picking

The classic application for an RFID gate is the passage scenario, e.g. at the loading gate when loading or unloading a truck. Logistics employees do not have to search for barcodes and scan them individually, which is time-consuming. The load is simply driven through the gate, i.e. the RFID gate, with a forklift truck. Within a few seconds, the gate automatically records all items marked with RFID labels or tags. All at once and without visual contact.

During this process, a check is carried out at the same time to ensure that all items in an order are correct and complete on the truck. The shipment is therefore automatically validated by the gate without any manual effort. There is no need to tick off individual items on paper lists.

If the RF KonSys Gate detects an error during this control process, it is indicated by a visual or acoustic signal. The dialogue on the gate monitor shows the employee the error so that it can be corrected.

No irritations: goods standing nearby are not detected.

True to the motto ‘RFID, yes, but simple!’, we use artificial intelligence in the RF KonSys AI Gate.

In classic RFID gate designs, the two factors of ‘maximum read performance’ and ‘selective detection’ of tagged items compete with each other. The higher the reading performance of a reading point, the higher the signal scattering or overrange, which leads to unwanted tag detection: so-called cross reads.

The RF KonSys AI Gate is based on the concept of the RF KonSys RFID Gate, which has been supplemented by a specially trained AI model to filter out unwanted cross reads.

The AI Gate determines which RFID-tagged objects have actually passed through the gate and which have not.

The RFID Consortium is currently the only provider offering AI in a practical gate solution, enabling the use of RFID technology in demanding application environments where RFID would previously have been ruled out due to permanent misreads (cross reads).

Airport: Mobile gate for air freight

We developed the RF KonSys Mobile Gate to give customers maximum flexibility in positioning the reading point. The gate on castors can be set up at the hall entrance or at special checkpoints between production and storage. It can always be used exactly where it is needed. This eliminates the need for multiple installations and thus increased investment.

This solution is ideal for small or medium-sized warehouses, as you can move the entire gate to the nearest door to load a truck or monitor the loading process.

The RF KonSys Mobile Gate offers you maximum flexibility and mobility. This concept makes sense if you do not achieve the necessary frequency of use at your doors to justify the ROI of a complete installation.

The simple RFID reading point, usually consisting of an RFID reader with an integrated or remote RFID antenna, enables the automatic detection of, for example, tools in CC or injection moulding machines or the detection of load carriers such as electroplating racks in the production line.

Flexible integration into your infrastructure

The RF KonSys RFID Gate has a modular design and can be used as a stand-alone unit or as part of a larger system. It can be seamlessly integrated into existing software solutions (e.g. ERP) and can be combined with other modules such as track & trace, inventory, replenishment control or quality assurance.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about the RFID gate

An RFID gate is a stationary system for detecting RFID transponders. It consists of antennas and a reader that automatically detects RFID tags as soon as an object passes through the gate. Detection is contactless, in real time and without visual contact. The data read out is transferred directly to connected systems and processed there – for example, for loading control or goods tracking.

Unlike manual scanning with barcodes, RFID gates can detect multiple objects simultaneously and without visual contact. This saves time, reduces human error and enables seamless documentation. In combination with AI, an RFID gate such as the RF KonSys Gate can also detect content errors, such as incorrectly assigned load units.
RFID gates are used in logistics, industry, automotive, food, chemicals, medical technology and many other areas. Typical application scenarios include goods receipt and dispatch, order picking, loading control, returns inspection and access control – for both objects and people.
The RF KonSys AI Gate combines RFID technology with artificial intelligence. While traditional gates only check for the presence of objects, the AI Gate also analyses constellations, load assignments and deviations – and provides immediate feedback in the event of incorrect loading. This increases process reliability and significantly reduces the error rate in goods dispatch.
Modern RFID gates are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing IT infrastructures. Thanks to interfaces with common ERP and warehouse management systems, implementation is usually possible within a few weeks. Optionally, a proof of concept can be carried out in advance.
Yes, in large warehouse and production environments, multiple RFID gates are often used in parallel. It is important to configure the gate frequencies and zones correctly to avoid interference. The RF KonSys system offers scalable solutions with central monitoring for this purpose.
